Pretoria Girls High – proof that racism is still alive.
The furore around the treatment of young black girls with regards to their hair is continuing to dominate social media timelines with reports of university students, parents and other supporters having joined the protest against the harassment of these young girls, who’s only fault seems to be the fact that they were not born with a different texture of hair than their lighter skinned classmates.
Gauteng MEC for Education,Panyaza Lesufi, visited the all-girls school today in order to investigate the complaints of learners as well as to engage with management and staff of the school. The MEC was made aware of the issue over social media with the hashtag #stopracismatpretoriagirlshigh, soon tending all over social media networks.
In a video that went viral,a white male security guard that was allegedly hired by the school to prevent a protest by the learners,is heard threatening to arrest a young black learner.Learners have complained that staff at the school unfairly discriminate against them because of the texture of their hair.Learners claim that are subjected to racially derogatory remarks from white staff members and have even threatened with not being allowed to write exams if they have an “afro” type hairstyle.
